Music Week, Day 3

One more day, one more song. This one, I'm sure, is familiar to many. It is, How Great Thou Art. My first association with this song is this: My BYU roommates and I had been invited, with many other girls from our apartment building, to a retreat in a friend's cabin in the mountains. We found the remote location, unloaded our bags, and stood on the porch, taking in the view. Who knows how long it had been since we'd been out of the city! One of my roomates began singing this song, and the other two of us joined her and sang it through to the end. We shared gratitude for our Creator, faith in our Savior, and friendship that strengthened each other.
Since then, that song has played in my head many times, often as I'm out on an ATV with my family in the mountains. We're isolated from each other by the noise of the machines, so conversation is limited. I often find myself directing my thoughts to the songs that describes the beauty around me. I love this one. I especially love that in the song, the awe of creation, leads the writer (and then, often, the singer) to humility, and "adoration." I know that for me, gratitude leads to feeling humble. Then I'm better able to feel the Spirit, and feeling the Spirit, I feel loved. Maybe that's why I love this song so much. :)

How Great Thou Art

O Lord my God, When I in awesome wonder,
Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made;
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

When through the woods, and forest glades I wander,

(Muir Woods)

And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees.

(on the trail, not far from home)

When I look down, from lofty mountain grandeur

(from Boulder Mtn.)

And see the brook, and feel the gentle breeze.

(at Clifty Falls)

Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

And when I think, that God, His Son not sparing;
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin.

Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

When Christ shall come, with shout of acclamation,

And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart.
Then I shall bow, in humble adoration,
And then proclaim: "My God, how great Thou art!

"Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!
